Handyman Insurance: Plan Coverage Around the Work

A handyman business should review insurance around its actual activities, workers and contracts. One generic policy description or limit is not a complete coverage plan. Use an insurance professional to assess the business rather than adopting a number from a blog.

Prepare a realistic service inventory

List routine jobs and occasional ones, the places where work is performed, who performs it and any subcontracting. Include tools, vehicles and work carried out from home in the discussion. Describe intended changes before adding a new service.

Discuss different risks separately

The SBA business insurance guidance distinguishes coverage types and recommends assessing risks, comparing terms and reassessing as a business changes. Use it as an orientation, not confirmation that a particular policy fits your work.

  • What third-party injury or property-damage exposures need review?
  • What arrangements apply to employees and to the owner?
  • How are tools, vehicles and work premises addressed?
  • What insurance terms do client contracts require?
  • Which tasks, locations or circumstances are excluded?

Match legal and contractual requirements

Ask the relevant state regulator about mandatory coverage, and have the insurance professional review contractual requirements. Do not assume the rules are identical for a solo operator, employees and subcontractors.

Maintain the information

Keep renewal dates and service changes in a regular review process. For a comparison method that does not confuse premium with protection, see comparing insurance quotes.

Looking for help with a home project?

Describe your home-service request or explore handyman services. This is not an insurance quote, tax consultation or verification of a professional's credentials. Confirm the assigned professional, scope, price and appointment before work begins. A booking deposit is not the total job price.
