What Does Handyman Insurance Cover? Read the Policy Scope

“Handyman insurance” is not one uniform package. The actual policy, endorsements, exclusions and circumstances determine the response to a claim. Do not assume a repair accident is automatically covered because a business has insurance.

Start with coverage categories

The NAIC small-business guide describes general liability, property, vehicle and other coverage separately. It identifies employee injury and vehicle-related claims among gaps in standard general liability. A business-owner package also does not normally include every coverage a business may need.

Questions about a home-service operation

  • Which repair and installation activities are included?
  • What exclusions apply to the work being proposed?
  • How are claims arising after the work is finished addressed?
  • What are the relevant limits, deductibles or other retained costs?
  • How should an incident or potential claim be reported?

Ask about workers and equipment separately

Describe the owner, employees, subcontractors, vehicles and tools to the insurance professional. Ask which arrangements apply to each rather than assuming the general liability document answers all of them. Do not assume an owner's own injury is covered by an employee policy.

Examples are not claim decisions

A broken window or leak can be a useful scenario to discuss with an agent. It is not enough information to promise a payout. Ask the agent to explain the relevant policy language and unresolved facts. See the general liability review checklist for a structured discussion.

Describe your home-service request or explore handyman services. This is not an insurance quote, tax consultation or verification of a professional's credentials. Confirm the assigned professional, scope, price and appointment before work begins. A booking deposit is not the total job price.
