Light Fixture Installation Handyman

Need a new light fixture installed? Maybe your current one is outdated, burned out, or you're just tired of looking at it. Whatever the reason, we handle light fixture installation the right way — safely, quickly, and without the markup you'd pay an electrician.

The Toolbox Pro has been installing light fixtures across your area for 15+ years. We know what works, what doesn't, and exactly how long the job should take. No surprises. No upselling. Just honest work.

What Light Fixture Installation Actually Involves

Here's what happens when we show up to swap out or install a light fixture:

  • Remove the old fixture (if there is one) and safely disconnect the wiring
  • Inspect the ceiling box to make sure it's rated for the new fixture weight
  • Assemble the new fixture according to the manufacturer's instructions
  • Connect the wires — black (hot) to black, white (neutral) to white, and ground to ground
  • Secure the mounting bracket and install the fixture
  • Test it. Make sure it turns on, dims if it's a dimmer setup, and doesn't flicker
  • Clean up any mess

Straightforward work. The tricky part usually isn't the installation itself — it's what you discover once you open up the ceiling box. Sometimes the existing wiring is fine. Sometimes it's a rats nest of tangled copper from 1987. Sometimes there's no box at all, which means we're running new wire and that gets more complicated (and potentially requires a licensed electrician, depending on scope).

When You Need Light Fixture Installation

We see this all the time in your area:

Replacing an outdated or broken fixture. The most common scenario. You've got an old boob light from 2003 and want something that actually looks decent. Pop in a pendant, a flush-mount with some style, or a modern chandelier. We remove the old one and hang the new one.

Upgrading a bathroom. Bathroom vanity bars are usually quick swaps. The existing box is already there. Takes about 30 minutes to an hour depending on how corroded the old fixture is.

Adding a fixture where none exists. Maybe you're finishing a basement, adding a new room, or you want light in a corner that's currently dark. This requires running new wiring from the panel or an existing circuit. Depending on complexity, this could need a licensed electrician. We'll tell you upfront what it is.

Installing a heavy chandelier. These need proper support. The standard box rated for 50 lbs isn't always enough. We'll upgrade the box if needed, or recommend a heavy-duty mounting system.

Recessed lighting retrofits. You've got old recessed cans and want to upgrade to LED. We install retrofit kits — basically new trim and LED bulbs that fit in the existing can. No new holes needed.

Light Fixture Installation Cost Breakdown

Pricing depends on what you're actually doing. Here's what you're looking at:

Fixture Type Typical Cost
Standard flush-mount or semi-flush swap $75 – $150
Pendant or hanging light $150 – $300
Chandelier (medium weight) $200 – $400
Bathroom vanity bar $100 – $200
High ceiling or new wiring required $400 – $650+

The overall range: $75–$650 for most jobs. Some bigger projects run higher, but that covers 95% of what we do.

What Affects the Price

Ceiling height. Every foot above 9 feet adds time. You're setting up a taller ladder, working higher, being more careful. Heights above 14 feet might require an extension ladder and takes longer to position safely.

Fixture weight. A chandelier over 35 lbs needs a reinforced ceiling box. The standard box from 1995 won't cut it. We'll upgrade it. That's another $20–$50 in parts and an extra 20 minutes of work.

Existing wiring. If there's no wire already overhead, we're running new wire from somewhere — either a nearby circuit or the panel. That's rougher work and costs more. Sometimes it requires a licensed electrician depending on how far the run is and what code requires.

Dimmer switch. Want to add a dimmer or swap an old one? That's $30–$80 in parts, plus 15 minutes of work.

Old fixture condition. If the old fixture is painted over, rusted, or held up with whoever-knows-what, removal takes longer. We account for that.

How Long Does It Take?

A standard like-for-like swap (remove old, install new) takes 45 minutes to an hour. Bathroom vanity bars are quicker — 30 to 45 minutes. A heavier pendant or chandelier with a new box upgrade? 90 minutes to 2 hours. New wiring runs could take half a day depending on the distance and obstacles.

Tools and Materials We Use

We show up with the basics: wire strippers, voltage tester, screwdrivers (Phillips and flathead), adjustable wrench, needle-nose pliers, wire nuts, a ladder (or extension ladder if needed), and a drill for any new mounting holes. We bring electrical tape and a headlamp because ceiling work is always darker than you'd think.

You supply the fixture itself. It should be unboxed and ready before we arrive. Read the instructions — some fixtures have oddball requirements we should know about upfront.

What We Include

  • Old fixture removal and disposal
  • Ceiling box inspection and upgrade if needed
  • New fixture assembly per manufacturer specs
  • Proper wiring connection
  • Function test
  • Cleanup

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you install recessed lighting?

We install LED retrofit kits in existing recessed cans. You've got old recessed lights and want to upgrade? Retrofit kits work great. But if you want brand new recessed holes cut into the ceiling with all-new wiring, that requires a licensed electrician and likely a permit.

Do I need a permit for a fixture replacement?

Simple like-for-like swaps? No permit needed in your area. You're just replacing what's already there. New wiring, circuit work, or significant additions? Yes, a permit is required. We'll tell you which bucket your job falls into before we start.

What if my ceiling box is damaged or missing?

We can install a new ceiling box if the damage is minor. If it's severe — rotted wood, missing entirely — we'll upgrade it and the cost goes up a bit. Sometimes the damage is so bad that the scope changes entirely. We'll assess it on site and be honest about what's needed.
