The DBPR Construction Industry FAQ describes an exception for work below $2,500 in total construction costs when the work is casual, minor or inconsequential. DBPR directs readers to the building department to establish whether a job qualifies and what local licensing requirements apply. It also explains that work requiring a permit generally does not fall into that minor-work category.

Ask about the actual work

Prepare a task list, property location and description of any equipment or building systems involved. Tell the building department whether the request is a standalone repair or part of a larger project. Ask which authority handles any specialized work rather than assuming the small-job exception answers every licensing question.

Do not use an online estimate as permission to start work. If the project changes, confirm that the licensing and permit assessment still fits the revised scope. Ask the assigned professional to identify the business and credentials relevant to the tasks they will perform.
