Small Repair Requests: A Licensing Scope Checklist

Use task descriptions to ask the right licensing questions, not as a list of automatically exempt jobs. The examples below identify information to include in a request. None establishes that the task is permitted without a credential or permit.

Mounting and assembly

For a TV, shelf, mirror or assembled item, describe the product, weight information, intended location, wall or support type and whether wiring or an outlet change is requested. Separate assembly from attachment to the building.

Surface and door repairs

For patching, trim, painting or a sticking door, describe the affected area and whether the request changes the opening or structure. Say whether moisture damage or an unknown underlying problem is visible. A cosmetic description should not conceal a larger repair.

Fixtures and connected equipment

For a faucet, fan, disposal or appliance, supply the model and explain whether the existing location and connections will remain. Flag new wiring, piping, venting or equipment relocation separately. Ask the regulator and building department which requirements apply before authorizing that scope.

Have the authority assess the complete project

Oregon CCB guidance shows why handyman work cannot simply be assumed to be outside licensing. California CSLB guidance also considers permits and workers, not price alone. Check your property's own jurisdiction rather than applying these examples nationally.

Turn the answer into a clear request
