Handyman License Requirements by State: Where to Check
There is no reliable single-dollar rule for every state and every handyman task. Treat the property location, actual work and applicable authority as the starting point. This page is a source-based orientation guide, not a complete fifty-state licensing database or legal clearance for a project.
Official starting points
- California: CSLB licensing and exemption guidance addresses project cost, permits and workers.
- Oregon: CCB licensing guidance identifies activities normally requiring licensing.
- Florida: DBPR construction FAQs explain the conditional minor-work exception.
- Texas: official business guidance distinguishes general business licensing from activity-specific requirements.
For another state, find its official contractor or trade regulator and the local building department serving the property. Do not apply a neighboring state's exemption to your project. Check the current source rather than a copied price table.
Questions to put to the authority
- Which licensing or registration rules apply to this exact task and location?
- Is a permit required, and who is responsible for obtaining it?
- If an exception is proposed, what are all of its conditions?
- Does the assessment include related work, materials, workers and the complete project?
- Would a change in scope change the answer?
Provide a written description and keep the authority's response with your project notes. Separate the issue of a business being registered from a person's qualifications, the permitted scope of a license and the coverage of an insurance policy.

Request help with a defined scope
Tell The Toolbox Pro what needs doing and where the property is located. A request or estimate does not establish the assigned professional's licensing, insurance or legal authority for every task. Confirm the actual scope, professional requirements, price and appointment before authorizing work. A booking deposit is not the total job price.
