Every soft-close Euro hinge has three adjustment screws. Most homeowners never touch them — and then spend $300 calling a cabinet company when the fix is literally three turns of a Phillips screwdriver. Here's the field guide we use on every kitchen cabinet job.
The Three Screws
Looking at a mounted hinge with the door open, you'll see the hinge arm attached to a mounting plate on the cabinet frame. In fact, the three screws control:
Screw 1: In/Out (Depth)
Location: The screw closest to the door, on the hinge arm itself. Usually the smallest of the three.
What it does: Moves the door closer to or farther from the cabinet face frame. Turning clockwise pushes the door IN (tighter against the frame); counterclockwise pulls it OUT.
When to use: The door sits flush on one side but gaps on the other. Adjust the in/out screw on the hinge closest to the gap.
Screw 2: Side-to-Side (Lateral)
Location: The screw at the back of the hinge arm, closest to the mounting plate. Usually the largest.
What it does: Slides the entire door left or right. Indeed, this is the screw you use most. Clockwise moves the door TOWARD the hinge side; counterclockwise moves it AWAY.
When to use: The gap between two adjacent doors is uneven — wider at top, narrower at bottom (or vice versa). Adjust the top hinge to fix the top gap, bottom hinge for the bottom gap.
Screw 3: Up/Down (Vertical)
Location: The screw on the mounting plate attached to the cabinet frame. May require loosening before the hinge can slide up or down on the plate.
What it does: Raises or lowers the entire door.
When to use: The door is higher on one side than the other, or doesn't align with the adjacent door vertically. Loosen this screw, shift the hinge up or down, re-tighten.
The Soft-Close Mechanism
The soft-close is built into the hinge cup — a small hydraulic damper that catches the door in the last 30° and pulls it shut gently. Specifically, when the soft-close stops working:
- Door drifts open: The damper fluid has leaked or the internal piston is worn. Importantly, not adjustable — replace the hinge ($6-$12 for Blum Clip Top, $3-$5 for builder-grade).
- Door slams: The damper adjustment tab (tiny slider on the hinge cup, not all models have it) controls closing speed. Slide toward the + sign for slower close.
- Door bounces open after closing: The hinge arm catch is worn. In fact, the door overshoots the catch point and springs back. Replace the hinge.
When to DIY vs. Call Us
If 2-3 doors need alignment: DIY with a Phillips screwdriver and 15 minutes of patience. Naturally, if 8+ doors are off (common after a kitchen has settled for 8-10 years), call us — $20/door for professional alignment is worth it when you factor in the time and frustration of fine-tuning 30+ individual screws across 16 hinges.
